As mentioned in Shiv Puran Ravana sacrificed nine of his heads as an offering to please Lord Shiva. At last when Ravana was about to sacrifice his tenth and last head, Shiva appeared in front of him and granted him the boon, restoring the others. This act made Ravana extremely powerful.

Then Ravana seeking a boon from Lord Shiva. He was requesting that the deity accompany him to Lanka. Shiva agreed, transforming into a Shivalinga but warning Ravana never to place it on the ground, lest it become permanently established there. Ganeshji was deeply worried about Ravana taking Shiva to Lanka. At the suggestion of Lord Vishnu, Ganesha adopted a deceptive approach, assuming the form of a small herder boy named Baiju and tricking Ravana into drinking a large amount of water with the help of Barun Dev, which made Ravana urgently needed to relieve himself. Ravana reluctantly entrusted the Shivalinga to the boy, who placed it on the ground when Ravana fails to return promptly.

That scared ground became today’s Baba Baidyanath Dham, which remains one of the twelve Jyotirlingas today.
